THE CALLIVE COMPASS

IF THE BLOG IS THE CORNER, THIS IS THE COMPASS

Practical guidance on building a nonprofit that lasts.

A NOTE TO START

If the blog is the corner, this is the compass

The most useful conversations I have had about running a nonprofit never happened on a stage. They happened in a corner — a quiet aside after a board meeting, a phone call at the end of a long week, the moment at a retreat when someone finally said out loud what they had been carrying.

Callive’s Corner - our blog - is that corner, opened up a little wider. This newsletter is how you find your way to it. Once a month, The Callive Compass gathers what we have published, adds a tool you might not find anywhere else, and lands in your inbox so you do not have to go looking.

NEW ON THE BLOG

Welcome to Callive’s Corner

Our first post is the one that explains everything else: why Callive exists, why we are opening this guidance up beyond our clients, and what you can expect twice a month.

The short version across a career spent in the executive director’s chair of a nonprofit, on the corporate side of community development, and now alongside small and mid-

sized social change organizations, one pattern kept repeating. Organizations doing necessary work were held back not by the quality of their mission but by the fragility of their structure. A board unsure of its role. A budget with no cushion. A founder doing the work of five people until they could not anymore.

The mission was never the problem. The scaffolding around it was.

A hesitation is not a failure. It is a starting point, and a far cheaper one to find now than in the middle of a hard season.

WHAT’S AHEAD

The four things that determine whether an organization thrives

Twice a month on the blog, and gathered here once a month, we will dig into one of these topics:

  • Governance and boards — what a board is really for, and how to help yours do its job well.

  • Strategy and sustainability — planning that fits your stage and holds up when the ground shifts.

  • Fund development — building revenue you can count on, not just chase.

  • Leadership continuity and succession — making sure the mission does not wobble when leadership changes.

Sometimes it will be a framework, sometimes a checklist, sometimes a hard-won lesson from the field.
